Say goodbye to city skin!

How to protect skin against air pollution

Air pollution has long been linked to a number of serious health issues, including strokes, heart and lung disease. It’s thought that nine out of ten people worldwide breathe in polluted air and, according to the World Health Organization, it’s responsible for killing seven million people every year.

Now, the latest research is blaming air pollution for causing premature ageing and wrinkles, as well as making skin conditions such eczema and hives worse. Traffic pollutants prevalent in cities and urban areas contain tiny toxic particles and harmful chemicals, as well as nitrogen dioxide. These air pollutants are responsible for respiratory illnesses, scientists say, but they also damage the skin too. Researchers studied a group of people in cities and found that age spots on their cheeks increased by 25% with a relatively small increase in pollution.

Though it’s not yet known how air pollution ages the skin, researchers believe it may trigger a damaging inflammatory effect in skin cells.

Put up a barrier

So how can you protect your skin from premature ageing? Firstly, aim to keep your skin as healthy as possible so that it acts as a barrier against pollutants. Foods good for the skin include nuts and seeds, avocados, oily fish, green tea and strawberries.

Make sure you cleanse your skin thoroughly morning and evening with a good quality, natural cleanser. Our Aloe Cleanse and Soothe Facial Wash contains a combination of natural ingredients, including organic Aloe Vera and Vitamin E, so you know you won’t be adding more chemicals to your already-embattled skin.

A good moisturiser offers long-lasting protection against damaging air pollutants. Try our Aloe Anti-ageing Day Cream SPF20, which includes anti-ageing green tea, as well as protection from UV rays.
